Types of Financial Aid

Planning how to finance your college education? Discover how to lower your out-of-pocket costs and support your academic journey.

Grants

Much like scholarships, grants do not require repayment. They are often awarded by the state or federal government based on financial need. Available grants include the Cal/Chafee Grant, the Federal Pell Grant, and the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).

Student Federal Direct Loans

Federal student loans are often the preferred option because they usually offer lower interest rates, flexible payment plans, and protections that help students manage repayment. Private loans from banks or credit unions can also fill funding gaps, but they often have higher interest rates and fewer benefits. Both require repayment.

Scholarships

Scholarships are financial awards that do not have to be repaid. Typically, they’re given based on academic performance, achievements in athletics or the arts, community service, or even based on your background or program of study. Scholarships may be from the institution or outside sources like professional associations, non-profit organizations, or businesses.

Work Study Program

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally funded program that provides part-time employment opportunities to students, helping them earn money to pay for their educational costs and gain valuable work experience. Students may work up to 20 hours a week while classes are in session. [Disclosure: Our institution does not participate in the FWS program for the current award years.]

Veterans Education Benefits

If you are a veteran or active military member, you may qualify for additional educational benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, which delivers financial support for school and housing expenses. If you are a veteran and military-affiliated student, you can apply for federal and state aid while also receiving VA benefits.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

Ready to start the financial aid process? Submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) is simpler than expected and only takes 30 minutes. To help out, we’ve created a guide outlining each step.

Student aid eligibility depends on several factors, including the federal, state, institutional, and private aid offered. To qualify for federal student aid, you must meet these requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Show financial need (for need-based aid).
  • Have a valid Social Security number (not required for citizens of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, or Palau).
  • Be enrolled or accepted in an eligible degree or certificate program at Angeles College.
  • Make satisfactory academic progress in your program.
  • Give consent to share your tax information when filling out your FAFSA® for 2025–26.
  • Confirm you’re using financial aid for education only and that you’re not in default on a federal student loan or grant.
  • Demonstrate you’re qualified to obtain a college or career school education by:
    • Having a high school diploma or a state-recognized equivalent, such as a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
    • Completing a high school education in a homeschool setting approved under state law. Or, if state law does not require a homeschooled student to obtain a completion credential, completing a high school education in a homeschool setting qualifies as an exemption from compulsory attendance requirements under state law.

Before filling out the FAFSA®, collect the financial and identification documents, including:

  • Your Social Security number or Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
  • Your (and your parents’) federal tax returns (IRS 1040 form and applicable schedules/forms) and W-2s
  • Records of child support received (if applicable)
  • Balances in checking, savings, and investment accounts
  • Business or farm assets, if applicable

Set up your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, which is your secure login and electronic signature for the FAFSA® and related documents.

Fill out the FAFSA®, which asks simple questions about income, financial situation, and general college plans. Since this information is used to determine your eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid, please provide accurate, up-to-date information.

Additionally, include Angeles College’s federal school code (041604) to ensure we receive your information.

  • The FAFSA® opens October 1 each year.
  • The federal deadline is June 30.

We recommend that you apply early for the best access to grants and work-study opportunities.

All aid is awarded based on eligibility and adherence to federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

After submitting your FAFSA®, you receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) that recaps your information and gives you an estimate of your aid eligibility. Please review it carefully and correct any errors as needed to avoid delays.

Angeles College will process your FAFSA®  and send you a financial aid offer. It outlines the types and amounts of aid you’re eligible to receive—grants, loans,  and scholarships—along with your estimated cost of attendance.

Once you review your offer, follow the instructions to accept or decline your aid. If you have questions, please connect with us. Angeles College’s Financial Aid Office works hard to provide comprehensive support to help you achieve your goals.
